BUYDRM was created in 2001 to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding online media sector. Its flagship product KEYOS is offered as both a service and a solution and represents more than five years of research and development in deploying digital rights management (DRM) technology.

Today the company is the preeminent provider of Microsoft DRM technology and a featured Microsoft Partner with 150+ customers in the entertainment, enterprise, and education industries. BUYDRM’s founder, Christopher Levy, is one of a handful of pioneers in the streaming media industry, and the only Microsoft MVP for Digital Media with a focus on DRM.

The KEYOS Pay Media Platform, offered as a monthly service (ASP), enables the secure deployment of digital audio and video media to PCs, network devices, and the Windows CE family of products including Windows Mobile devices and Smartphones.

The KEYOS Platform provides four methods to package content, including its KEYOS GUI Client, KEYOS Command Line Batch Client, KEYOS Web Packager, and integrated support for the Live Windows Media 9 Encoder with a drop-in ".DRM Profile." TVP Unveils Joost

The company formerly known by the code name The Venice Project (TVP) this week revealed its official brand – Joost. Currently available in private beta testing, Joost combines the best of TV and the best of the Internet by offering viewers a unique, TV-like experience enhanced with the choice, control, and flexibility of Web 2.0. Joost exemplifies the distributed computing industry’s newest and most promising phenomenon – P2PTV.

Joost provides a new way of watching TV that combines the best of full-screen television entertainment with online interactivity and community benefits to bring an unprecedented selection of video content to viewers anytime, anywhere. Joost is based on a state-of-the-art, secure, peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming technology.

Co-founded by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, the well-known founders and principal executives of long-standing DCIA Member Skype, Joost fills a critical gap in the online video entertainment arena. Joost is powered by a secure, efficient, piracy-proof P2PTV platform that enables premium interactive video experiences while guaranteeing copyright protection for content owners and creators.

"People are looking for increased choice and flexibility in their TV experience, while the entertainment industry needs to retain control over its content," said Fredrik de Wahl, CEO of Joost. "With Joost, we’ve married that consumer desire with the industry’s interests."

Joost is the first global P2PTV platform, bringing together advertisers, content owners, and viewers in an interactive, community-driven environment. Joost can be accessed with a broadband Internet connection and offers broadcast-quality content to viewers for free.

"The Joost name has global appeal, embodies fun and energy, and will come to define the best of TV and the best of the Internet," added de Wahl. To learn more about Joost P2PTV or to become a beta-tester, please click here.

Obama Taps P2PTV

Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) formed a presidential exploratory committee Tuesday morning, a move allowing him to raise and spend money in pursuit of the US Presidency. He announced the formation of the committee via a video being redistributed online using P2PTV. You can view the video here.

Senator Obama enters the race as a top-tier candidate with significant name recognition, a devoted base of supporters, and an ability to raise money rivaled only by Senator Hillary Clinton and former Senator John Edwards. On a trip to New Hampshire last month, he drew an unprecedented 1,500 person audience.

Preview of Joost P2PTV

Excerpted from Playfuls Report by Dan Nicolae Alexa

Yes, I have been testing the application since January 10th, and trust me, it’s truly amazing. You’ll have some links inside to convince yourselves, but more will come for sure in the future.

It’s quite extraordinary to just think that I have probably been among the very few people in the world (around 200) who had the chance of testing the Venice Project (TVP) from the beginning of the beta tests (except for its developers, of course). So what is so special about Joost? Well, to be honest, everything. The fact that you have access to any TV program you like (of course, we’re talking about TV channels that have agreed to stream their content in the beta-version of Joost) is simply amazing. Music, documentaries, sports, you name it. And all this while you read a .pdf document or archive a folder.

That’s right: you can resize the window of Joost/TVP to fit in just one corner of your PC’s screen; you can then concentrate on something else, with your earphones on, listening to the music from MTV or hearing what Bush has to say about Iraq (I personally enjoyed a making-of-video documentary about Paris Hilton featured on MTV, in which she said she has brains…).

The menus inside the Joost application have a nice, glass-like effect (something that you also see in the Aero or XGL desktop) and allow you to clearly see what is "underneath". I guess some of you have already seen the pictures provided on the joost.com site or those previously posted on flickr.com (if not, you have mine).

The highlighted feature turns orange and you have some additional buttons: a small i, for information about the program/show you are watching and a small arrow which indicates that there is even more to learn about the program (click on the target, hit "Enter" or simply push the right arrow button on your keyboard). The scrolling between channels is easy and intuitive, and very responsive (but I don’t know how responsive it will be when the TV streaming in the background will overlap with gathering the infos about new channels or the existing ones). What I mostly liked was the social Internet-TV experience you get: as you can see in one of the photos, everyone will have access to a "My Venice" (or My Joost) feature. You will be able to rate the channel (and hopefully, even a particular show-that will be one of my propositions for them) that you are viewing, while in the same time talking on Channel Talk or Google Talk (yeah, they are present here too) which are two different IM channels.

You also get your news delivered in real time thanks to the News Ticker you see in the pics. All these windows (including a clock) are transparent, and can be moved on the screen.

You can also search for specific channels (but the search still needs some serious improvements) and in the future we will probably have the possibility to search for specific shows. Everything works on the same basis as Kazaa or Skype: every logged-in user becomes a signal-carrier for others. The more users are connected, the better the signal. Of course, it is recommended to have a broadband Internet connection, but the application is said to work fine even on sluggish networks (I didn’t test that, but it was specified on the site). The P2P network will be ad-driven (I have already seen some advertisement to T-mobile). My overall impression is that despite what other news agencies have said (probably without having access to the real TVP client) Joost is NOT a YouTube killer. Most likely they will continue to co-exist for a long time, simply because Joost is a P2PTV application while YouTube is a user generated video site, where everyone posts (almost) whatever they want (which you cannot do on TV). Joost doesn’t bring a better alternative to the Internet video, it brings TV to the Internet, thus becoming complementary to YouTube, rather than its rival.

Hey Joost, Have Some Babelgum

Excerpted from NewTeeVee Report by Jackson West

Joost, nee The Venice Project (TVP), hasn’t even officially launched yet, so it would be premature to declare it the victor in bringing the television experience to an Internet device near you.

Plenty of other people are trying to figure out ways to use broadband to disrupt current distribution models, including Silvio Scaglia. The founder of Fastweb and Omnitel has invested EU10 million in his own P2PTV venture, Babelgum, the service offering of fellow DCIA Member Babel Networks.

Talking to the Financial Times, Scaglia remarked, "When I started work on this a year and a half ago I was afraid we’d end up with five competing P2PTV services. The fact it’s still two probably gives us a good lead."

We gave the beta a spin. Simplicity is one of its most endearing qualities: it looks and feels a lot like watching television, as it was probably meant to. The interface is slick and straightforward – no instructions were provided or, frankly, needed to get comfortable. The download and install took just a few minutes, and once logged in, the video content began straight away.

You can choose to view Babelgum in a window or full screen, and can choose among three different video display sizes within that box. Controls pop up when you move your mouse, and include a small ‘remote’ for changing channels or adjusting volume, a slider showing the length of the program, and general controls to view channel and program info, organize bookmarked videos and change your settings.

The technical specifications aren’t demanding – Windows XP with Quicktime 7 installed running on a 1GHz Pentium with half a gig of memory and a decent video card. My 2005 Thinkpad had no trouble with it, and the streaming and playback seemed smooth over my 150KBps DSL connection. Granted, the video quality on a screen any bigger than 15″ wouldn’t be acceptable, which puts it ahead of YouTube, behind unauthorized downloads, and about even with Joost.

The channels themselves weren’t particularly compelling, but I understand the difficulty in acquiring a lot of content (or revealing your license partners) this early in the game. There are movie trailers, canned reports from AP and Reuters, episodes of Rocketboom, and one channel that’s just commercials. (Which is actually something I’ve been arguing should have been done years ago — and no, MTV doesn’t count).

There is real interactivity in the ability to drill down to clips through the TV menu and add them to your video favorites, where you can then further lump them into folders. You can also rate episodes.

It’s in this area of tension between just watching the lights flicker by and actually tagging and organizing content that somebody will find the sweet spot. YouTube isn’t something you can just sit back and watch, but does offer powerful tools for searching, linking, and ranking content to make it more findable. Babelgum is on the other end of the spectrum – it’s great at pushing a constant stream of stuff to watch.

Having taken the long-tail view to heart, Babelgum is looking to sign up lots of niche content, both from big clearinghouses like the wire services, who like non-exclusive deals, and from independent producers such as vloggers with a professional touch. It’s free to add your content and they’re guaranteeing $5 per 1000 views of a clip. While I didn’t see how ads will be deployed, that’s what’s expected to pay for it all. Content rights security is accomplished through unspecified DRM and by virtue of the content being free to view anyway.

It will be interesting to see what features are added and whether or not content compelling enough to attract an involved community are in Babelgum’s future. If it catches fire in the vlogosphere and signs up a major network or two to provide content, then I could see it as worthy of some veg-out sessions.

Babel Networks’ CEO Erik Lumer will be a principal speaker at the upcoming P2P MEDIA SUMMIT NY.

Ultramercial’s Business Model for P2PTV

Excerpted from ClickZ News Report by Enid Burns

Free and municipal Wi-Fi hotspots cover a growing number of metropolitan areas, and are increasingly paid for with ads a user sees when first logging on. Hotspot and advertising company JiWire has now jumped into the fray with plans to offer ad-supported Wi-Fi through a relationship with DCIA Member Ultramercial. The ads will appear prior to gaining free Internet access at hotspots. Laptop wielders can avoid the ads by paying a fee to get online. "It gives the user the choice whether they want to pay for content with traditional currency, or use the ads as currency," JiWire VP of Marketing David Blumenfeld told ClickZ News. "You’re using your eyeballs for currency instead of your wallet."

While JiWire will likely serve national brand ads through its Ultramercial agreement, others in the Wi-Fi space believe local ads are more accepted by consumers. Across the US, municipal Wi-Fi is in some stage of planning or deployment in over 300 cities, according to a new report on the topic from Forrester Research. The report says ad-supported services could have broad implications for consumers, including providing free or low-cost broadband to residential users, those on the go, and Internet newcomers. Free and ad-supported access could address price issues concerning over half of the 60 percent of US households currently using dial-up or who have no access from home.

Last year Ultramercial made a deal to provide free mobile service on Virgin Mobile in exchange for watching ads on the Internet. Advertisers on Ultramercial services include Honda, the Navy, Chrysler, Intel, and RadioShack.

Ultramercial’s CEO Dana Jones will be a principal speaker at the upcoming P2P MEDIA SUMMIT NY.

Corporate P2PTV from RawFlow

Research announced by DCIA Member RawFlow, a leading provider of live P2P streaming technology reveals that 80 percent of IT directors experience problems with their current webcasting solution. 40 percent stated scalability as the biggest drawback followed by insufficient bandwidth (16 percent), poor quality (12 percent), and high costs (12 percent).

While only 25 percent of companies currently use a webcasting solution to communicate with staff and stakeholders, 65 percent would invest in one if there was a low cost, low bandwidth solution available.

Corporate P2PTV can be a powerful communication tool enabling organizations to broadcast CEO speeches, conference keynotes, product launches, and AGMs to hundreds and thousands of people instantly and simultaneously.

Using RawFlow’s live P2P technology, corporate P2PTV is made simple and straight forward. RawFlow offers a simple software solution that connects users in such a way that the network resources are utilized to distribute the bandwidth in the most cost-effective way. This minimizes the impact on the source server’s bandwidth and allows users to stream high quality content securely, efficiently and resiliently.

Mikkel Dissing, CEO and Co-Founder of RawFlow commented, "Today international and transatlantic communication is integral to business and it is essential that companies disseminate information quickly and equitably to stakeholders, partners, investors, and staff in disparate offices and time zones.

Webcasting is the ideal solution but live webcasting has traditionally required significant investment in bandwidth and server capacity which prevents them from sharing real-time information. Some organizations even record events on to DVDs and send them out via mail to their stakeholders causing delayed decision making and little interactivity."

There is increasing pressure on companies to be seen as environmentally aware, whether through reducing air travel or investing in green computing initiatives.

RawFlow P2PTV is an attractive means to share information and is a cost effective and green alternative to traveling long distances for business meetings. Over 30 percent of IT directors named these pressures as reasons to prompt them to invest in a live video streaming solution over the next two years.

"The research confirms that there is high demand for a reliable, scalable and cost efficient corporate webcasting solution. RawFlow’s P2PTV technology satisfies this need making corporate webcasting problem-free and enabling organizations to communicate efficiently and cost effectively.

RawFlow’s P2PTV solution utilizes a company’s existing network, negating the need for additional investment. Set-up time is also simple so users can be live on the peering network in five minutes," Dissing continued.

Pricing for RawFlow’s corporate live P2PTV solution is offered on an annual or per user basis with its Intelligent Content Distribution (ICD) software license. However, RawFlow’s sales process is consultative so it customizes a service package to suit the needs of individual corporate customers.

RawFlow VP of Business Development Ian Franklyn will be a featured speaker at the upcoming P2P MEDIA SUMMIT NY.

Pando Networks Enables Large File Sharing

Force10 Networks, a pioneer in building and securing high performance networks, announced that DCIA Member Pando Networks has deployed the TeraScale E-Series family of switch/routers and S50 data center switches to build a high performance 10 Gigabit Ethernet network that is reliably processing over 50 Terabytes of data every day.

The industry leading density and resiliency of the Force10 TeraScale E-Series provides the scalability and investment protection Pando requires to enable nearly three million customers to upload and download files as large as one Gigabyte.

"With installs growing at nearly a million per month, we needed a network that would support high daily traffic volumes without flinching," said Pando Networks’ CTO Laird Popkin. "The TeraScale E-Series was the only solution we found that could withstand the high volume of traffic on our network without impacting performance."

The Force10 TeraScale E300 is the foundation of Pando Networks’ hybrid P2P file-sharing network and provides the resilient, high density 10 Gigabit Ethernet capacity in the core of the network that Pando needs to ensure the performance of its service. Additionally, the unique stacking capability of the Force10 S50 allows Pando to build a resilient aggregation layer within the data center to interconnect its servers. Together, the Force10 TeraScale E-Series and S50 provide Pando with a high-performance end-to-end network that will seamlessly support continued customer and traffic growth.

The emergence of Web 2.0 companies such as Pando are generating dramatic traffic growth within their networks as well as within the ecosystem of Internet exchanges, IP transport carriers, and Internet service providers.

Pando Networks’ CEO Robert Levitan and CTO Laird Popkin will conduct a special demonstration of Pando’s latest offerings at the upcoming P2P MEDIA SUMMIT NY.
