The Advancement of Digital Rights Management (ADRM) Working Group is signing-up participants and discussing, refining, and prioritizing action plans targeting five constituencies in advance of the group’s formative meeting taking place in late June.

Major DRM Platform Providers — Improved interoperability among dominant DRM standards-setting entities can result in improved downstream efficiencies for DRM industry integrators and re-sellers.

CE Device Manufacturers — A common set of DRM requirements for set-top, DVR, display, and related consumer electronics makers can improve the product development and implementation process.

High-Value Content Distributors — A standardized approach to degrees of protection required for levels of content relative to the value of revenue streams being protected can increase industry productivity.

Consumer End-Users — Simplifying the processes involved in accessing multiple instances of differently DRM-ed content across numbers of co-owned devices can lead to greater acceptance and adoption.

DRM Industry Opponents — Public communication of security protection benefits associated with access control as well as the provision of greater value and utility for protected data can counter misguided opposition.

We’re pleased to extend the DCIA’s partnership with the Cloud Computing Association (CCA) to include its 2015 series of Cloud Computing Boot Camps.

Cloud Computing Boot Camps are designed for small-to-midsize businesses (SMBs) and their counterparts in healthcare organizations and government agencies.

We have partnered previously with CCA, since 2012, on the Cloud Computing East & West series of conferences and on the Cloud Developers Summit & Expo.

CCA will host three Cloud Computing Boot Camps in 2015, the first of which is scheduled for July 30th in Washington, DC.

This series of one-day events will be held in regional markets around the country exclusively for managers whose responsibilities include evaluating, purchasing, and implementing cloud-based solutions.

According to a recent forecast, the US SMB cloud market will grow to $55 billion in 2016 — reflecting a 40% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) since 2011.

In 2014, SMBs used an average of five cloud-based solutions ranging from hosted storage to infrastructure as a service (IaaS), along with other business applications and services.

By 2016 it is estimated that each SMB in this market will be utilizing an average of nine cloud-based services.

Caitlyn: Can Big Data Measure Big Culture Change?

I don’t know about you, but it sure feels like the times they are a changing. The Caitlyn Jenner Vanity Fair cover — of course only a tiny percentage of its viewers actually saw the physical magazine — was probably as stunning a cultural event based on a singular image as I can ever recall.

More even than the Diane Sawyer network television interview with (then) Bruce Jenner, and certainly more than the accompanying Buzz Bissinger Vanity Fair profile of Jenner, it certainly recalls the old Andre Agassi Canon commercials: “Image is everything.”

Beyond Ms. Jenner, the greater inclusion of the LGBT community, especially the “T” part of that, has seemed to be everywhere in media in the last year. Jill Soloway’s “Transparent” not only took its historic place as the first breakout “hit” among Amazon’s original online video offerings, but more so for its sensitive yet irreverently comedic portrayal of a family dealing with (among other issues) the transitioning of the family’s paterfamilias.

Social Networking Helps Identify Cancer Biomarkers

The advent of online social networks has led to the rapid development of tools for understanding the interactions between members of the network, their activity, the connections, the hubs and nodes. But, any relationships between lots of entities, whether users of Facebook and Twitter, bees in a colony, birds in a flock, or the genes and proteins in our bodies can be analyzed with the same tools.

Now, research published in International Journal of Data Mining and Bioinformatics shows how social network analysis can be used to understand and identify the biomarkers in our bodies for diseases, including different types of cancer.

Tansel Ozyer, Serkan Ucer, and Taylan Iyidogan of the Department of Computer Engineering, at TOBB University, in Ankara, Turkey, explain how the detection of disease biomarkers in general and cancer biomarkers in particular has become an important task in medical research and diagnostics. They have now used the tools of Social Network Analysis (SNA) to help them unravel the connections and identify the biomarkers present in patient genomic microarray data.

San Jose Tests IoT to Become a Smarter City

San Jose, CA, a city at the center of the modern computer industry isn’t as smart as it would like to be — or, according to some technologists, as smart as it ought to be.

But San Jose officials are working to change that starting this month, adding Internet-connected devices atop city streetlights that can detect everything from earthquakes to traffic jams. It is the boldest step yet San Jose has taken toward becoming a “smart” city, where services such as garbage pickup, irrigation, electricity and parking are controlled and monitored through the Internet and data-collecting software to make them, ideally, cheaper and better.

The city last week finalized plans for a pilot program with anyCOMM, a fledgling Internet of Things (IoT) company out of Sacramento County, CA that makes Wi-Fi-connected devices, or nodes, which can collect volumes of data from city streets that will be stored, sorted and returned to city officials to help with city planning and improve public safety.

The program marks anyCOMM’s public debut after 15 years of testing the technology in stealth.

IBM Picks-Up Private Cloud Expert Blue Box

IBM has announced that it has acquired Blue Box, an OpenStack private cloud as a service outfit.

The amount forked out wasn’t disclosed, but IBM said that the move reinforced its commitment to deliver flexible cloud computing solutions for customers across public, private and hybrid environments.

Blue Box prides itself on a central vision whereby cloud computing is made easy, and aims to bring the simplicity of the public cloud — namely the fact that it “just works” — to private cloud deployments, the latter of which can get very messy in some cases.

The company offers a streamlined single management tool for OpenStack-based private clouds which can be used from any location, and supports managed infrastructure services across hybrid clouds and IBM’s Bluemix platform.

Apple to Unveil Tool Kit for Watch App Developers

When Apple began selling the Apple Watch in April, Phillip Ryu did not rush to create an app for it. Because apps on the device have limited animation and the software takes several seconds to load, Mr. Ryu, a founder of Impending, which makes mobile games, said he was constrained in terms of what programs he could create for the watch.

Now, he is rethinking that decision. On Monday, Apple will begin its annual developer conference, where the company is set to release new tools for software developers to create smarter apps that will gain deep access to the watch’s heart-rate and motion sensors, among other components.

“It feels like we have both our hands tied behind our backs, and that’s why you haven’t seen anything really impressive,” Mr. Ryu said about apps for the watch, which was released with around 3,500 programs. Now, “it sounds like they plan on untying our hands.”

Gaining more apps for Apple Watch is crucial to Timothy Cook, Apple’s chief executive.

Cisco Expands Intercloud Capabilities

Cisco recently announced its intent to acquire Piston Cloud Computing, a four year-old startup offering OpenStack cloud distribution. Cisco stated that this acquisition will help improve product, delivery and operational capabilities of its Intercloud services including cloud automation and scale. Cisco helped fund an $8 million Series B round for the company in 2013 and is listed as a principal investor.

Cisco’s interest in acquiring Piston follows its recent acquisition of private cloud provider Metacloud and should help bolster its global Intercloud platform and architecture. Cisco’s Cloud Services architecture is also based on OpenStack open source software and is designed to help customers easily and securely use data across both private and public clouds.

The acquisition is likely to provide a boost to Cisco’s plans to build the world’s largest Intercloud, which is a secure network of globally distributed and remotely managed clouds capable of meeting growing customer needs, especially as part of the Internet of Everything (IoE).

Alibaba Signs Equinix Deal to Take on Amazon’s Cloud

Chinese retail giant Alibaba is going bigger in cloud thanks to a new partnership with Equinix, which operates more than 105 data centers around the world.

The stated goal is to make it easier for multi-national corporations in the US to conduct business in China and vice versa. Aliyun, is Alibaba’s cloud computing arm, just as Amazon Web Services is Amazon’s cloud computing arm. Initially, Alibaba’s cloud services will be offered via Equinix Cloud Exchange facilities in Hong Kong and Silicon Valley, with additional rollouts planned for other Equinix sites worldwide, said Chris Sharp, Vice President of Innovation for Equinix, Redwood Shores, CA.

There is plenty of headroom for expansion in this deal. Equinix has data centers in 33 countries and many other interconnection points where different providers can hook into each other’s services. Even cloud providers that run their own data centers plug into Equinix interconnection facilities so they can offer fast links to outside services. Equinix will also gain 40 more data centers across Europe via its recently announced plan to acquire Telecity for $3.6 billion.

Vend Releases Mobile Cloud Retail Solution
