Cloud Spending Grows Faster

Spending on cloud computing services is growing faster than previously expected, with software-as-a-service (SaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) two of the most rapidly expanding segments.

Worldwide public cloud services revenues are expected to grow 18.5 per cent in 2017 to a total $260 billion, up from $219.6 billion last year, according to Gartner.

While that’s still a small element of total worldwide IT spending — which stands somewhere around $3.5 trillion — it’s a significant number when compared to worldwide enterprise software spending and is expected to reach $351 billion.

In particular the use of software as a service is rising more rapidly than previously predicted, said Sid Nag, Research Director at Gartner.

“SaaS is also growing faster in 2017 than previously forecast, leading to a significant uplift in the entire public cloud revenue forecast.”

SaaS revenue is expected to grow 21 per cent in 2017 to reach $58.6 billion.

Cloud Enters Golden Time in China

With artificial intelligence (AI) booming across the world, cloud computing as its supportive infrastructure enters the “golden time” for development, Economic Information Daily reported on Thursday.

The newspaper said that the wide use of AI cannot happen without cloud computing, which helps improve efficiency hardware usage and avoid idleness and waste of the resources.

And this reflects in the price: cloud computing provides the same services for 1 yuan that traditional IT companies offer for 4 yuan.

In July, the State Council, China’s cabinet, issued guidelines on AI development, and AI projects and other areas related to AI, such as big data, cloud computing, quantum computing, and brain science, have also been proposed.

The guideline set three stages for AI development by 2030: catch up with the advanced global levels in AI technology and application by 2020, make major breakthroughs in basic theories by 2025, and become a global innovation center in this field by 2030.

Network Computing Moves to the Edge

In the two decades since Sun Microsystems declared “the network is the computer,” cloud computing has established itself as the de-facto model.

The economic benefits of a near infinite, elastic infrastructure that customers don’t need to manage themselves have assured that.

Storing information centrally has made it possible to deliver information wherever it’s needed, to any device, supporting the explosion in remote work, smartphone apps, social networks and more.

Now we are entering a new phase of network computing.

The emergence of IoT and sensor networks, along with demanding applications, such as multiplayer online gaming, real-time analytics and self-driving cars, mean cloud computing is not the right model to carry us into the future.

What’s Next for the IoT?

The internet of things (IoT) continues to evolve, attempting to overcome its poor reputation for cybersecurity and making the case for wider adoption, especially by enterprises.

Consumer IoT, largely represented in smart-home automation, remains a market being targeted by Amazon, Apple, Google, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, and other technology titans.

The big bucks are in Industrial IoT, though.

That market has attracted AT&T, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Verizon Communications, and hundreds of startups.

Some of those startups, such as C3 IoT and Uptake Technologies, have achieved “unicorn” status and attracted significant investments.

Navy Plans New Cloud Contract

Despite what may have been the best of intentions over the last several years, the Navy, like the rest of the Defense Department, has struggled mightily to migrate its systems to the cloud over the last several years.

Although most of its public-facing websites have made the move, all but about 20 of its internal applications are still operating in legacy Navy-owned data centers.

But officials say they’re taking several steps over the coming year that are meant to remove cloud transition bottlenecks.

One is to expand the number of cloud options available to Navy commands and system owners.

As of now, the service still has just one broadly-available commercial cloud contract: the limited-scope agreement for Amazon Web Services that’s allowed it to migrate all of those public websites.

Telefonica Mexico Improves Network Quality

Telefonica Mexico, provider of wireless telecommunication, fixed-line, mobile, public, and data services in Mexico, has announced today that it has signed an agreement with Tutela, the world’s largest mobile network crowd sourced data company.

The partnership will mean that Telefonica Mexico has access to crowd-sourced network quality data from over 150,000 Mexican mobile phone users. Insights and usage patterns will enable the company to improve the mobile quality experience for its customers.

Anonymous network quality data provided by Tutela will include details of signal strength and quality, device usage and download speed patterns.

These insights will enable Telefonica Mexico to analyze the experience of their own and their competitors networks, identify opportunities for improvement and to trouble shoot network performance issues as they arise.

Rackspace Expands APAC Multi-Cloud Footprint

Before the launch of its Singapore office, Rackspace was supporting most of its Southeast Asian and Singapore-based customers from Hong Kong, according to Ali Azarian, Sales Director for Asia at Rackspace.

“The data sovereignty laws in Singapore are getting stricter, so our customers have said their data needs to be in here rather than our Hong Kong datacenter,” he told Computer Weekly in Singapore.

Azarian said having a Singapore office made sense, given that Rackspace already has partnerships with major cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure that have established datacenters in the city-state.

He added that both Amazon and Microsoft had encouraged Rackspace to open a Singapore office to take advantage of the market opportunity not only in Singapore, but also in the neighboring markets of Malaysia and the Philippines.

“There was a huge gap,” said Azarian. “There wasn’t somebody who could help someone with a budget of $5,000 a month to manage everything.”

How Israel Caught Russian Hackers

It was a case of spies watching spies watching spies: Israeli intelligence officers looked on in real time as Russian government hackers searched computers around the world for the code names of American intelligence programs.

What gave the Russian hacking, detected more than two years ago, such global reach was its improvised search tool – antivirus software made by a Russian company, Kaspersky Lab, that is used by 400 million people worldwide, including by officials at some two dozen American government agencies.

The Israeli officials who had hacked into Kaspersky’s own network alerted the United States to the broad Russian intrusion, which has not been previously reported, leading to a decision just last month to order Kaspersky software removed from government computers.

The Russian operation, described by multiple people who have been briefed on the matter, is known to have stolen classified documents from a National Security Agency (NSA) employee who had improperly stored them on his home computer, on which Kaspersky’s antivirus software was installed.

Govs & Hackers Team to Secure Elections

Hackers are joining forces with US governors and academics in a new group aimed at preventing the manipulation of voter machines and computer systems to sway the outcome of future US elections, a source familiar with the project said on Monday.

The anti-hacking coalition’s members include organizers of last summer’s Def Con hacking conference in Las Vegas, NV, the National Governors Association and the Center for Internet Security, said the source, who asked not to be identified ahead of a formal announcement due to be made on Tuesday.

The Washington-based Atlantic Council think tank and several universities are also part of the project, the source said.

The coalition will be unveiled as Def Con organizers release a report describing vulnerabilities in voting machines and related technology that were uncovered in July.

Hackers pulled apart voting machines and election computers at the three-day event, uncovering security bugs that organizers said could be exploited by people trying to manipulate election results.

Cybersecurity Jobs on the Rise

Across the economy, US employers added an estimated 105,000 IT jobs to their ranks in September, according to a new CompTIA report.

The new positions included 3,200 jobs in the IT sector, 3,000 jobs in computer and electronic products manufacturing, and 4,200 jobs in IT services and customer software development.

Meanwhile, data processing, hosting, and related services only added 300 jobs.

“Because postponing digital business transformation is becoming an increasingly risky proposition, businesses of all sizes seek the expertise and tools to modernize their legacy systems,” Tim Herbert, CompTIA’s Senior Vice President of Research and Market Intelligence, said.

Despite the rise in new positions, job posts in IT experienced their largest drop of the year, falling nearly 40,000 in September from the previous month.
